Shadow 's Happy Tail

Hi NHSPCA,

Shadow has been such a great addition to our house, we absolutely love him! He has been settling in quite smoothly- no accidents in the house, hasn't chewed anything and listens for the most part. Every night he sleeps in his crate (which we keep open) and snuggles up with his blanket and doesn't get up in the morning until we do. He goes on a walk every morning and evening plus a run, hike, or game of fetch in the afternoon. He has been walking very well on his leash. When it comes to meal time we have taught him to go get his bowl and bring it to us. He sits and stays until we tell him he can eat his food. We have been hand feeding him a majority of the time- if we just put the bowl on the ground he goes crazy and eats it in two seconds.

We have been working on 'drop it' when playing fetch and he will every time if we have treats for him. Inside we work on 'drop it' with his toys- he definitely understands the command, but doesn't always do it immediately if we don't have treats.

Practice makes perfect!

We found a fantastic vet within walking distance of our house, so we walked Shadow there for his first visit. They were very thorough during his visit and really focused on behavior. She showed us how to work on showing dominance with his food and toys and making Shadow give them up to us. We were sent away with a lot of good advice plus his heartworm preventative for the next 6 months.

Shadow's biggest issues are growling at sounds, especially at night if he hears someone walking around but can't see who it is. He will stop if we correct him, but will growl again after a few minutes. Also, the vet noticed that he doesn't like his back end being touched by strangers and is a bit head shy. We are hoping to get to the training sessions!

Overall Shadow has been fantastic. He loves to snuggle with us and play with his toys. Car rides are one of his favorite activities- if the car door is open he is sure to jump right in. He has been a joy to hike with- I see a doggy hiking pack in the near future for him. We are hoping to bring him by one day soon for a visit!

See you soon,
Natalie and Jon
