Ongoing Investigation and Rescue Updates

Ongoing Investigation : Deceased Dog Found

Surveillance System Donated and Installed

Update: November 8th

After hearing about Miranda's case, local Security System company, Norris, Inc. of Greenland, NH (www.norrisinc.com) generously donated an outdoor surveillance system valued at over $6000 to the NHSPCA. With additional donations from concerned citizens, we were able to purchase extra cameras to complete the donated system. This security system will ensure that the next time an animal is abandoned on our doorstep, we will be able to identify the person and bring charges.

It has been over three weeks since the NHSPCA discovered a black and white female Cocker Spaniel who had suffocated to death inside a plastic bin outside our doors. The dog had been put into the air tight bin and left outside the door during business hours when the agency was open to the public. She has been named Miranda and the investigation into her death remains ongoing.

Many people have made donations to our SOS fund to help purchase a surveillance system for the agency. In addition, donations have been made towards Miranda's burial and the purchase of a headstone. Miranda will be buried at Rolling Meadow Pet Cemetery on Union Road in Stratham, NH, which is maintained by the NHSPCA. She will be laid to rest, but the memory of what she endured lives on with the staff, volunteers and supporters of the NHSPCA. It is our strongest wish that someone will be able to identify Miranda and help us get justice for her. Below are pictures of the collar that Miranda was wearing at the time of her death. There is also a link available to pictures of Miranda. Please, if you feel you might know this dog, contact the Stratham Police Department or our Field Services Manager, Steve Sprowl at (603) 772- 2921 x111 with any information you may have.

Special Thank You to Norris, Inc and all who have donated towards Miranda's final resting place.

Reward Offered In Stratham, N.H., Dog Death

(Oct. 19, 2007) The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is offering a reward of up to $2500 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for abandoning a cocker spaniel, between seven and nine years old, in an air-tight plastic tub outside the New Hampshire SPCA (NHSPCA) located on Portsmouth Ave. in Stratham. The dog was found dead, apparently from suffocation, and there were indications the dog struggled to escape.

The Case: On Sunday October 14, shelter staff sorting donations left outside the NHSPCA discovered a dead Cocker Spaniel in a plastic container. This black and white, female Cocker Spaniel was found in a dark blue Sterilite bin marked Bar Stuff with Christmas bows in the bottom. The dog appeared to be approximately 7 to 9 years of age, had a light purple collar with blue and yellow flowers.

UPDATE: October 19th

Stratham, NH - The black and white Cocker Spaniel that suffocated to death in a plastic container on Sunday October 14, 2007 has still not been identified. The 7-9 year old dog had a light purple collar with blue and yellow flowers.

This inhumane and cruel act causing immeasurable suffering and the resulting death is a serious crime and the NHSPCA continues to seek the public's assistance in identifying the dog and owner. For identification purposes, photographs of the dog are now posted on our site. Please see the link below to view pictures.

"We are putting the photo on our web site to aid in identification. There is a posted warning before the photo can be opened knowing that it may be very disturbing for viewers to see," stated Investigator Steve Sprowl. "We are hoping to get a witness that knows the identity of the dog." "Further, I have given the dog a name. I have named her MIRANDA. The name is significant in two ways. The first simply to give her the dignity of a name and the second is that if the owner is identified, he/she will be read their MIRANDA Rights under state law if they are arrested for this crime."

The case is currently under investigation by the NHSPCA and assistance has been requested by the Stratham Police Department. Anyone with information is urged to call the NHSPCA Investigator at 772-2921 extension 111 or call the Stratham Police Department. Anonymity can be granted if requested.

Deceased Dog Found

Sunday, October 14th

On Sunday October 14, 2007, staff sorting donations left outside the NHSPCA discovered a dead Cocker Spaniel in a plastic container. This black and white, female Cocker Spaniel was found in a dark blue Sterilite bin marked "Bar Stuff" with Christmas bows in the bottom. The dog appears to be approximately 7-9 years of age, had a light purple collar with blue and yellow flowers. She appears to have had puppies at some time and had "cherry eye" in her right eye.

It was apparent that the dog died from suffocation and had clearly struggled to escape. Whether the dog died prior to, during or after being transported is unknown at this time.

Without identification tags or microchip, we are unable to identify the dog or previous owner. It is a felony crime to abandon an animal and we are seeking the public's assistance in identifying the dog and owner.

The case is currently under investigation by the NHSPCA and assistance has been requested by the Stratham Police Department. Anyone with information may call the NHSPCA Investigator at 772-2921 extension 111 or call the Stratham Police Department.
