Abandoned Outside in Freezing Cold
Stratham,
NH - On Wednesday morning, March 7, 2007, a call was received by Cruelty Investigator
Steve Sprowl for New Hampshire SPCA. The caller reported that a dog was left out
in the back of an open bed pick up truck at the Exeter Stop N Shop parking lot.
The caller stated that the small dog was shivering and appeared to be extremely
cold the temperature in Exeter this morning was 12 degrees. Further investigation
uncovered that the owner of the truck was not the owner of the dog and that he
had no knowledge of how the dog happened to be left in his truck. Animal
Control Officer Jones of the Exeter Police Department was called out to investigate
along with Investigator Sprowl and the dog was then delivered to the NHSPCA in
Stratham. At the NHSPCA it was discovered that Razzy, as the dog is
known, had been adopted out from their Adoption Center the previous month. When
contacted by Sprowl, the dogs owner confessed to having left her in the
back of the truck after driving around looking for a place to discard her. Exeter
Police Department will investigate the case further and charges of Abandonment
are expected to be brought against the dogs owner. Abandoning
an animal is considered animal cruelty under the State of New Hampshires
Criminal Code and carries a misdemeanor charge for the first offense. Citizens
that have a need to dispose of their unwanted animals should call a humane society
in their area and seek help in surrendering the animal rather than abandoning
the animal. The
New Hampshire SPCA is a community resource center that provides animal adoption,
education, investigation and sheltering services in a professional and compassionate
way. The Adoption Center is open from 11 am 4pm on Monday, Friday, Saturday
and Sunday, 11 am 7pm on Tuesday and Thursday, and closed on Wednesday.
