50
Dogs Rescued in Salem, NH
On Friday, September 14, 2007
the New Hampshire SPCA Field Services Division was contacted by
Salem Animal Control Officer Kelley Demers requesting assistance
on the removal of over 50 dogs and 2 birds from a residence in Salem
NH. ACO Demers stated the house had been condemned due to unsanitary
conditions and the animals needed to be removed. "In this case,
the animals were not in terrible condition. The residence in which
they were living was unacceptable and hazardous to the health of
the animals", said Executive Director, Lisa Dennison.
Steve Sprowl, Manager of Field
Services Division, NHSPCA was assisted by members of the New Hampshire
SPCA Disaster Response Team and Adoption Center Staff in removal
of the animals. As one of only two agencies in the state employing
a full time investigator, The New Hampshire SPCA is called upon
at times to coordinate rescue efforts in partnership with other
humane agencies. In this rescue, the New Hampshire SPCA partnered
with Monadnock Humane Society and the Salem Animal Rescue League.
The New Hampshire SPCA took possession of 17 of the dogs and one
bird. In addition to the animals taken by the three agencies on
hand animals were also taken in by the Humane Society of Greater
Nashua, Concord-Merrimack SPCA, and the NH Humane Society.
The facilities holding the animals
have not been given legal ownership of them and therefore they are
not placed for adoption at this time. No other information is available
pertaining to the animals or the case as it is still under investigation
by the Salem Police Department.
The New Hampshire SPCA depends
on community support to help care for homeless animals. Donations
may be made to the SOS Fund via the web site at www.nhspca.org,
by phone at (603) 772-2921 or by mail to SOS Fund, PO Box 196, Stratham
NH 03885.
