In the most successful event ever held in support of the animals, attendees of the 14th Annual Auction for the Animals donated more than $171,000 for the New Hampshire Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NHSPCA).

More than 200 friends of the animals turned out in their finest attire for the annual auction held at the Wentworth by the Sea in New Castle, Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008, marking the most profitable benefit in the history of the Stratham-based NHSPCA. "It was an incredible night! Despite all that we hear about the economy, our wonderful community came out in support of our homeless animals. We are so very grateful. On behalf of the nearly 4,000 animals that we care for each year, we would like to extend our most sincere gratitude to all that attended for their extraordinary generosity," said Lisa Dennison, Executive Director. "The success of the event was largely due to the support provided by our sponsors," Dennison said. "Our most sincere thanks to our Presenting Sponsor, The Veterinary Emergency, Critical Care and Cancer Treatment Center of NH, our Angel Sponsor, The Spotted Donkey Co., and Furball Friends, The Maureen Carey Group, Portsmouth Regional Hospital and TD Banknorth - Government Banking."

Additional sponsors included Adoption Advocates: At Your Service, C.P. Management Group, Crow Construction, Granite Springs Foundation, a Friend of the Animals and Piscataqua Savings Bank; Pet Pals: Gary Blake Saab, Grizzard, and Midwest Veterinary Supply and In-Kind sponsors,
2-Way Communications, Ambrosia Gardens, KISS 95.3 FM and WERZ 107.1 FM.

The evening included a special "Fund-A-Need" auction item where attendees raised their bidding paddles to indicate the level of the donation they wished to contribute. Those "special funds" will be directed to a project that will enable the NHSPCA to become more energy efficient and convert to renewable resources. "The project is affectionately named Frosty's Fund after a cat that came in to us last winter nearly frozen to death and who is now living in a wonderful forever home," said Lisa Dennison. "This project will allow us to begin by installing an eco-generator and a heat recovery system. It will allow us to redirect valuable resources from energy costs, back to caring for animals. We believe it is the responsible thing to do, for our donors, our animals and the planet." During the live auction, over $62,000 was raised to fund the new energy initiative, including a very generous match by NHSPCA Past President, Joanne Lamprey.

The event featured a silent auction containing over 200 items, raffles and a fantastic live auction. Each item in the auction was donated to the NHSPCA and a list of donors may be found on the NHSPCA's web site. The auctioneer for the evening was well-known radio and TV personality Billy Costa of KISS 108 FM in Boston and NECN's TV Diner, who both entertained the crowd and helped increase the bidding. Mr. Costa also generously donated 3 separate appearances on his TV show to the live auction. Another highlight of the live auction was a visit from Randy Price of Channel 7 NEWS in Boston, who came to the podium to talk about the item he had donated, a private tour of the Channel 7 Newsroom followed by dinner with Randy himself.

"Our thanks go out to the volunteers, donors and sponsors that made this year's auction such a tremendous success," said Sheila Ryan, Director of Development and Marketing. "We couldn't have done it without the help of so many people."
