Wayward Goat Captured

On Tuesday, February 19, the New Hampshire SPCA assisted Derry, NH Animal Control in the capture of a goat from the home of a resident of Holmes Street. The goat had been reported by the homeowner as having been camped out on their front porch for days. The goat was clearly seeking shelter from the cold and weather and had also been sleeping on the porch.

Derry Animal Control had been unable to capture the goat and contacted NHSPCA Field Services Manager, Steve Sprowl for assistance. All prior attempts to approach the goat resulted in the goat running off the porch and into the nearby woods. Mr. Sprowl assessed the situation and determined that the best option for capturing the goat was to set up a drop net system that had been donated to the NHSPCA during the high interest saga of the Golden Ghost in 2006 in Raymond NH.

After waiting for favorable weather, the net was set on the morning of February 19. Mr. Sprowl gave the Derry Animal Control Officer the control button that drops the net. In just a few hours the goat went under the net to eat the grain left there for her and the ACO activated the net and captured the goat. The goat initially was taken to the Derry Animal Pound and was later transported by Mr. Sprowl to the barn at the NHSPCA. The goat will be evaluated for health and temperament and eventually will be made available for an appropriate adoptive home.

The New Hampshire SPCA depends on community support to help care for homeless animals. Donations may be made to the SOS Fund via the web site at www.nhspca.org, by phone at (603) 772-2921 or by mail to SOS Fund, PO Box 196, Stratham NH 03885.
