SUMMARY:Reading with the Animals - Oct 2023
DESCRIPTION:Children in grades 1-8 who are reading at any level are invited to join us at the NHSPCA to read to animals from our adoption center or small animals from our Humane Education classroom. This program helps children improve their reading skills in a comfortable and relaxed environment while also helping the animals by providing socialization and human interaction. Reading sessions last 25 minutes (timeslots are listed as 30 minutes to allow time for our readers to exit before the next reader comes in) and take place Mondays each month between 4 pm and 6 pm.  Please note\, we want our readers and the animals to have quiet and calm surroundings\, so reading sessions are for one child at a time! If you have siblings or other pairs of children who would like to attend at the same time\, please email us at education@nhspca.org to see if we have the space and staff to host you! \nCost: $10 per session \nRefund/cancellation policy: It is not the NHSPCA’s policy to give refunds for cancellations. For events postponed due to illness or inclement weather\, we will make all attempts to reschedule or provide a credit to use toward future programming.   \nWaiver: I recognize that in conjunction with my child’s attendance at the New Hampshire Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NHSPCA)\, my child will be in contact with and may be allowed to hold and pet animals. I understand that despite all precautions made\, there is a chance that my child may contract a disease or illness by handling the animals. I further understand that there is a chance that my child may sustain a scratch or bite while handling animals. I understand that the above is illustrative of the types of risks involved in participating in programs at the NHSPCA\, but is in no way a complete list of possible risks. Are you looking to have fun in agility and build on the foundations that you learned? This class is for you! Continuing Agility will teach teams more basics in agility. Learning different handling maneuvers\, turns\, and the dog walk in short sequences. Students will be introduced to tunnels under the A frame and continue working on the teeter and weave poles. Successful communication will be achieved using a positive reinforcement\, reward based training. This class is meant to be fun and give you and your pup the opportunity to move into the Intermediate Agility class\, or you and your pup can just enjoy agility and take this class as many times as you’d like to keep them active. \nPrerequisites: Completion of  Intro to Agility or instructor approval. \nSpecial Notes: This class is not for aggressive or reactive dogs. DESCRIPTION:We’d like to welcome families with children ages 2-5 to visit our Humane Education classroom for story time with our classroom animals!  Registration is recommended and space is limited. \nWe offer story time options Tuesdays and Thursday 10:45 -11:30. During story time\, children will listen to a story about an animal\, color a picture\, and visit the animals in the classroom.  \nPre-registration is recommended\, walk-ins welcome if space is available.  Each session will offer a total of 12 spaces\, with a maximum of three “tickets” per family (one adult may bring up to three children). When signing up\, please “purchase” one ticket for each child attending.   \nCOST: $5 per child (max of 3 tickets per order)\, if walking in cash or check is preferred.

DESCRIPTION:Bring or borrow a book and read to shelter animals. Research has shown that reading to animals has a positive impact on both the animals and the people who interact with them. It increases both reading proficiency and confidence in children. It also socializes the animals and helps them get adopted. Reading with animals is a win win for everyone!\nReading with Animals is open to everyone 5 years and older. \nEvery Monday between 4 pm and 6 pm. Sessions are 20 minutes long.  \nPLEASE NOTE: This event takes place after regular hours and the building will be locked. Please wait at the middle door marked “Learning Center”. You will be greeted by staff at your assigned time. \nCost: $10 per session (Select the date and the time you would like below) \nRefund/cancellation policy: It is not the NHSPCA’s policy to give refunds for cancellations. DESCRIPTION:Come spread joy to homeless animals and shine a light on the lifesaving efforts of the NHSPCA by joining our favorite winter event\, Deck the Howls! \nChildren ages 6-12 are invited to join us on Thursday December 14\, 2023\, from 5:30-7:30 pm for a special opportunity to take a candlelight tour\, read a bedtime story to one of our rescues\, make holiday crafts\, decorate the shelter and enjoy some yummy treats.  \nWear some howliday PJs (or any comfy jammies!) and closed-toe shoes and bring your favorite story to share with the animals. Don’t have a favorite? Don’t worry\, we’ll have books you can borrow!  \nCOST: $25 per child  \nDue to the size of our indoor spaces\, we recommend parents either drop their children off or limit adult visitors to one per family. We want to make sure the kids and staff have plenty of room to comfortably move around and that our animals don’t get overwhelmed! Please note\, if you do choose to stay\, you may be asked to wait in the lobby for portions of the event.   \nBooking and Refund Policy  \nSpaces for this event fill up quickly\, so register early! Given the popularity and low cost of this event\, no refunds will be given for cancellations. In the case that the event must be cancelled due to inclement weather\, we will offer a credit to use toward future programming. DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Ashley Conte \nDuration: 5 Weeks (Jan. 3rd– Jan. 31st) \nClass Time: 1 Hour \nLocation: New Hampshire SPCA – Training room \nClass Description: It’s time for school for you and your pup!  This introductory class is for puppies 6 months and under to help them and you coast through the challenges of puppyhood.  In addition to learning how to effectively house train your pup\, how to prevent jumping and biting and understanding proper puppy socialization you will learn all the basic manners such as sit\, down\, come\, stay\, leave it\, drop it and how to walk properly on leash.  This class is all taught using positive reinforcement techniques which is fun for you and the whole family! \nPrerequisites: None \nSpecial Notes: This class is not for aggressive or reactive dogs. This class is meant to be fun and give you and your pup the opportunity to move into the Intermediate Agility class\, or you and your pup can just enjoy agility and take this class as many times as you’d like to keep them active. Never let anyone question Fido’s good nature again\, because you have the paper to prove it! This course is developed to help your dog achieve “good citizen” status with the final week ending in the official AKC Canine Good Citizen test. The CGC is a wonderful award to have for a companion dog or for any dog that is being considered for Therapy or Service Dog Work.  \n When you’ve been awarded your CGC\, it means that your dog has been evaluated and is considered to have good manners in public—to be a “canine good citizen”! Upon passing of the CGC test at the end of this course\, you will be given the paperwork to submit to AKC for your dog’s official certificate. DESCRIPTION:Get started on your New Year’s resolutions with a morning of yoga and meditation to benefit the animals. Yoga teacher Holly Moccia will lead a one-hour vinyasa flow style class appropriate for adults and teens of all yoga levels – from novice to experienced yogi – with a meditation to finish.  The best part\, we’ll be in the NHSPCA’s Training Room with cute animals! Prior to finding her true passion in teaching yoga\, she was also a certified personal trainer for years helping her clients get stronger physically and mentally. In Holly’s yoga classes\, you will find her warm inviting nature along with her light heartedness and a dose of humor.
