TITLE: Lead Certified or Licensed Veterinary Technician
REPORTS TO: Veterinary Center Manager
HOURS: Monday-Friday 8:00am-4:00pm
Hourly (non-exempt), full-time at 40 hours/week

The NHSPCA is excited to announce the open position for a Lead Certified Veterinary Technician as part of our growing team. This position will fill a crucial gap in current operations, providing guidance to Vet Center volunteer and staff and facilitating patient flow throughout the workday.

Job Function:
As a member of our medical team, you will be providing the best medical and surgical care to our shelter population seeking new forever homes and also providing access to veterinary care to our community in need, including low cost spay/neuter, dentals and preventative medicine. This individual filling this role has responsibility for assisting veterinarians and the coordination of clinic care in accordance with NHSPCA’s policies, procedures or laws that apply.
Specific Responsibilities: Outline the various aspects of the role with a summary to describe each

Leadership:

  • Identify shelter animals needing medical services and schedule them for their needed services in a timely manner to reduce length of stay
  • Train and assign daily responsibilities to volunteers, veterinary assistants, and other veterinary technicians
  • Provide suggestions to increase safety, efficiency, and impact
  • Ensure all veterinary machines are regularly serviced
  • Monitor inventory in conjunction with the Clinic Manager

Clinical Care:

  • Coordinate and cooperate as the lead on daily Clinic flow and act as a liaison between the Clinic staff, Veterinarian, Manager and Director of Animal Services.
  • Administer daily treatments and feeding as needed in Clinic under Veterinarian’s supervision.
  • Perform all necessary diagnostic testing utilizing multiple diagnostic tools and platforms (including, but not limited to CBC, blood chemistry, X-Rays, urine testing, leukemia, FIV/FeLV, parvovirus, heartworm, fecal, intravenous catheters initiated, intravenous fluid administration, intubation) and monitor animal treatment progress.
  • Prepare animals for surgery.
  • Assist Doctors in anesthesia induction, monitoring animals’ vital signs during surgery, and iso-fluorene and oxygen level in anesthesia machine daily.
  • Check recovery state after surgery.
  • In an emergency, administer life-saving medication under Doctor’s supervision.
  • Perform or assist in the euthanasia of animals in the Clinic.
  • Consistently demonstrate appropriate use of PPE when in quarantine / isolation spaces and provide information to other staff at the agency on best practices using PPE.
  • Utilize high quality, high volume techniques on spay/neuter days.

Medical Support, Maintenance & Recordkeeping:

  • Fill prescriptions and prepare medications, medication monitoring charts, dosage changes. Coordinate and communicate medication administration requirements with the other Clinic and animal care staff.
  • Accurately calculate and record all medications and injections administered.
  • Promptly report any irregularities of controlled drug records to the Doctor in charge of the Clinic.
  • Log controlled drugs as necessary.
  • Assist with the maintenance of inventory of pharmaceuticals, equipment, and supplies and collaborate with other Clinic and Adoption Center staff on medication logs and overall inventory management.
  • Assure monitoring and support equipment such as anesthetic machines, cardiac monitors, scopes and breathing apparatus are in good working condition.
  • Clean and maintain facility daily. Including: Clean and sterilize instruments and other material daily; Refill bottles with chemical solution daily; Clean exam, surgery rooms and other spaces in the Clinic as needed.

Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have 3+ years of experience as a technician, have passed the VTNE and is a certified or licensed veterinary technician or nurse, experience with high volume, high quality spay/neuter and strong leadership experience working with volunteers, veterinary assistants, and other technicians is preferred. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Associates degree in Veterinary Technology.
  • Current certification in New Hampshire.
  • Experience in HQHV spay and neuter techniques.
  • Equivalent work experience as a Veterinary Technician will be considered.

The NHSPCA is excited to announce the open position for a Veterinary Center Manager as part of our growing team.  The Veterinary Center Manager oversees the daily operations of a high volume, mission-driven veterinary clinic that serves both shelter animals and the public. This role is responsible for ensuring the delivery of high-quality, low-cost, and accessible care, including spay/neuter services for cats, dogs, and rabbits, as well as community wellness care, euthanasia services, dentals, and other procedures as capacity allows.

The manager directly supervises a team that includes receptionists, veterinary technicians, veterinary assistants, and volunteers, fostering a collaborative and compassionate work environment. They are responsible for staff scheduling, coordinating appointments for both internal (shelter) and external (public) clients, and maintaining efficient clinic workflows. This position also plays a key role in balancing operational efficiency with the organization’s commitment to accessibility, animal welfare, and community support.

MAIN OBJECTIVES:

  • Responsible for developing, planning and implementing a calendar of community medical services to through ClinicHQ in a deadline driven, fast paced environment.
  • Able to work independently, as well as within a team. Must be able to anticipate and oversee project needs and growth, discern work priorities, and meet deadlines with little supervision, and be willing to work occasional evenings and weekends.
  • Oversee VC receptionists, providing guidance, scheduling, and other administrative tasks as needed
  • Maintain a safe workplace through equipment management and state certification as well as ensuring staff and volunteers in the Veterinary Center follow agency safety rules
  • Manage Community Programs to include: Spay/Neuter Clinics and growing Community Wellness
  • Formulate a proposed calendar of public medical services; plan and coordinate the day to day and long-term operations; including budgeting, implementation, staffing, and developing daily agendas
  • Understand community medical needs and adjust appointment types as applicable
  • Master Clinic HQ administrative services
  • Oversee and provide support for Veterinary Center receptionists
  • Work in conjunction with the Volunteer Coordinator to onboard volunteers to assist in the Veterinary Center.
  • Assist with the creation of budgets and projection of goals, at times doing so independently.
  • Standardize the NHSPCA community wellness programs
  • Ensure the accurate tracking of all revenues/expenses including receipts, correspondence, in-kind contributions and supporting documentation as well as inventory control of Veterinary Center items.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred. A combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be qualifying.
  • A proven ability to take projects from inception to completion while simultaneously executing competing priorities, both independently and alongside a team.
  • Excellent skills in verbal and written communication and customer service
  • Understanding of budget control, expenses and allocations.
  • Self-directed and able to set a personal schedule that maximizes efficiency and results.
  • Knowledge of animal welfare field, veterinary and shelter medicine is a plus.

SKILLS:

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to be flexible, multi-task, and work under pressure in a fast-paced, goal-driven environment.
  • Ability to build productive business relationships.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, shelter software preferred.
  • Comfortable handling companion animals, including those with behavioral concerns.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication, relationship building and stewardship skills; ability to personally connect with, network and engage diverse groups.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Normal office environment as well as a veterinary clinic environment. It is necessary to view and type on computer screens for long periods requiring eye-hand coordination and finger dexterity and working in an environment which can be stressful
  • Requires some lifting occasionally (up to 50 pounds).
  • Potential exposure to zoonotic diseases, dangerous and fractious animals, and high noise levels. Work schedule is typically Monday through Friday. Work schedule and hours may vary; evenings and weekends may be required. Requires working with and among shelter animals.
