Yesterday, as Florida was bracing for yet another hurricane, we were feeling particularly grateful to be able to assist in freeing up resources for southern shelters so they can rescue more displaced pets and reconnect more families.
On Wednesday, October 9, the New Hampshire SPCA welcomed 12 dogs from our friends at the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). These dogs, originally rescued through an alleged cruelty case in North Carolina, had been in HSUS’ care in Maryland prior to the storms. Our team began talking with HSUS about transporting this specific group of dogs weeks ago; however, when the need to move animals in response to the storms became more urgent, we were able to shuffle things around to accept the transport sooner than originally expected.
With the help of Pilots to the Rescue, this group of dogs—which includes two chihuahua puppies and a 10-pound poodle mix—stepped foot on New Hampshire soil yesterday. These dogs have began their 48-hour quarantine period and will be seen by our veterinary team once cleared. Most of these dogs will need to be spayed or neutered. We are expecting that members of this group will start to become available for adoption mid-next week.
According to HSUS, these dogs were part of a large group of animals found living in overcrowded, filthy conditions in NC in early September. Approximately 60 dogs and cats were found living in stacked cages in a 960-square foot residence. Thankfully, they were removed and transported to HSUS’ facility in MD because the NC shelter was already at capacity.
These dogs will be joining the more than 200 animals currently in care at the New Hampshire SPCA. We were also pleased to welcome a transport of 25 cats last night with the help of our friends at BISSELL Pet Foundation and Cathy Bissell, and have 10 more dogs scheduled to arrive via Take Me Home Advocates for Transport out of Lockhart, Texas next week.
