Three dogs with uncertain beginnings but unlimited potential

Looking for a bit of a project with a great deal of potential? Mini, Mercedes, and Tesla have experienced more uncertainty in their short lives than most dogs ever will. Originally part of a court case in Alabama, these girls spent nearly a year—basically their entire lives—in a holding shelter before being transferred up north.

This transport should have marked an exciting, fresh start; however, once they arrived in New Hampshire, their journey stalled once more.

When another local rescue reached out requesting assistance with these dogs, we were happy to help. We welcomed them to our facility, provided them with proper veterinary care, and got right to work earning their trust. We know trust takes time… and these girls have every reason to be cautious. We, on the other hand, have every reason to believe they’re worth it.

We’ve been working closely with each of these dogs and what we’ve learned is clear: what you see at the shelter is not who these dogs really are. In our Dog Pavilion, they have messy kennels and are usually either hiding in the shadows or jumping up at the glass… their uncertainty and overwhelm on full display.

However, when taken to a calmer setting, a beautiful thing happens: they soften and show us that connection truly is what they’re after.

Thanks to our patient staff and volunteers, they’re making great progress. With gentle guidance and routine, they’re learning to trust, discovering the joy of play, and finding comfort in the simple things: a familiar face, the sight of a leash in hand, and the scent of the woods. They’re making strides with housetraining, learning to accept and give affection, and starting to believe the world might not be so scary after all.

Life certainly hasn’t been easy for these girls so far, but we have incredible faith there are patient, loving families in our community who will more than make up for it. Mini

1 year old  |  Female  |  36 pounds

Mini has a gentle soul and a heart full of potential, but it doesn’t show well here in the shelter. When she was taken to a home environment on a field trip, she was overwhelmed—nervous about the car ride, unsure of doorways, and constantly seeking safe corners. After a few visits, Mini began to blossom. With patient, consistent care, she revealed her affectionate, playful side and started forming deep bonds with her caregivers.

She enjoys snuggling on the couch, stretching out on a yoga mat next to her person, and locking in to binge watch TV. Outdoors, Mini lights up—she loves hiking, sunbathing, running, and playing with her favorite “toys”: water bottles! She’s curious, creative, and has shown no reactivity to other animals like dogs, chickens, or sheep. She’s also well-mannered at mealtime, housetrained, and tolerant of grooming.

Mini still seeks out a “safe space” indoors and prefers to rest in spots where she can keep an eye on her people. She gains comfort from routine, gentle guidance, and having a quiet retreat available when she needs it. Because of her sensitive nature and early fearfulness, Mini needs a calm, structured home with patient adults who will continue to help her build confidence at her own pace. In the right home, we believe she’ll be an incredibly loving and loyal companion—equal parts adventurous and affectionate.

Mercedes

1 year old  |  Female  |  34 pounds

Mercedes is easily the shyest of this group. When she arrived, she was visibly terrified—tail tucked, ears back, body low—and had to be carried. Since entering foster care, however, she has made remarkable progress in a short time. Her foster family created a calm, supportive environment with a crate in a quiet office and gave her the time and space to explore at her own pace. Having two other dogs in the home was incredibly helpful; she followed them on walks, which gave her the confidence to participate, and even started showing early signs of play in the yard.

Mercedes was timid but curious, slowly exploring the house and choosing safe spots like a rug in the bathroom and her open crate. She had only one accident her first night and quickly caught on to housetraining. By the next day, she was taking treats, and while still hesitant to go outside alone, she willingly followed the other dogs on a long lead. Stairs were initially challenging but mastered in just two days. She has also begun responding to her name and coming when called, a major step forward.

While Mercedes remains cautious and shy, many of her fear-based behaviors—like constant tail tucking and ear pinning—have faded. One touching moment saw her calmly lying in a dog bed while the family watched a movie, showing she is learning to feel safe in a home environment. Her foster experience shows she thrives with routine, patience, and the companionship of other dogs. A future home will need to be exceptionally patient and understanding, but with the right environment, Mercedes has incredible potential to continue blossoming.

Tesla

2 years old  |  Female  |  46 pounds

Tesla has a bright spirit and a playful heart. We’re not sure Tesla has ever had the chance to experience life in a home setting, but we know she’s eager for the chance.

This fun-loving, affectionate girl enjoys playtime and human companionship above all else. Approach her kennel with a leash in hand and she will light right up! She enjoys being outside and having the opportunity to sniff to her heart’s content… and will show you just how happy she is with adorable little bounces. While Tesla has had positive introductions with other playful, like-minded dogs, she can be possessive of high-value resources, so she’ll need to be the only pet in the home.

Tesla will thrive with a committed adopter who can continue to help her learn, offer structure, and provide all the love she’s been waiting for. Since she has no experience in a home setting, we cannot guarantee she’s housetrained. However, if she’s anything like the others, there’s a good chance she is! If not, we have no reason to believe she’d be difficult to train. She’s ready to leave the shelter life behind and start fresh—with you!
