OCTOBER 4, 2024 — Real talk… Marlo, 6, is about as socially awkward as they come. This 72-pound goofball has never had a family to teach him how to do all the things… so when he does get to experience new things, he has the unique ability to make it weird for everyone involved.

The President of the Weird Dog Club (Marlo) is what we’d consider “a lot of dog”… but he’s got a lot of heart, too.

Marlo has been in our care since August with very little adoption interest… 40+ long days in a kennel for a big, energetic dog is hard… but before he even came to the New Hampshire SPCA, he had already spent a chunk of time at a shelter in South Florida. The truth is, all this time spent in a confined space is really starting to take its toll.

It’s apparent that this guy has never had anyone invest any time into his training. He’s got the pieces but hasn’t learned how to put them all together to become a Certified Good Boy. Mix his lack of training with his growing frustration of being homeless for so long, and we are presented with a dog who is having trouble regulating his big feelings. He will really benefit from a dog-savvy family that has the time and patience to work with him and teach him everything he needs to know.

The world is this boy’s oyster and just the IDEA of said oyster simply gives him the zoomies.

If you were to ask Marlo what his favorite part of every day is, he’d likely tell you it’s when he gets to run outside with his dog friends. This guy truly loves other dogs — he will show JUST how much he loves them by clinging to them like Velcro. Even with this Stage Five Clinger tendencies with other pups, he has won over the hearts of many of our dogs with his silly charm and down-for-anything spirit. He would really love if his future home came with another dog, but it’s not mandatory.

Marlo has watched many of his buddies leave behind empty kennels as they walk out with their new families. We really hope his day will come soon. If you’re looking for a bit of a training project that will reward your efforts with an endless amount of love, please come in and ask to meet Marlo. This guy has a big heart that’s just aching to have someone to love.

Our Adoption Center is open from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. every day except Wednesdays (closed) and we’re located at 104 Portsmouth Avenue in Stratham, NH. We hope to see you soon.

NOVEMBER 6, 2024 — Are you looking for an adventure buddy? Marlo, 6, is still here and waiting for someone to fall in love with his awkward charm. To give this boy a break from his kennel during his long stay, our incredible volunteers have been taking him to hike the trails at Stratham Hill Park.

Here’s what they had to say about their two most recent trips:

“Marlo was amazing on our hike at Stratham Hill Park! He enjoyed exploring and was great on the 30-foot leash. He rarely pulled, and whenever he reached the end of the line, he’d automatically turn back for a quick check-in (which, of course, earned him a treat). He mostly strolled along at a leisurely pace, focused on sniffing and taking in the sights and sounds, with only a few excited moments where he picked up the pace for a quick run.

He was calm around other dogs in the distance, never pulling or showing too much interest. Even birds flying right past didn’t faze him! Though he barked a bit in the car on the way there, he relaxed in the back seat on the way back, happily sniffing the air through the window.

The following week, Marlo recognized our car and was super excited to hop in! He may or may not have gotten himself a bit tangled under the seat cover—no worries, though, as he let us help him onto the seat without any issues.

On the trails, it was clear to see that Marlo was thrilled to back. He soaked up every single moment of sniffing and exploring. There were more dogs this time, and he greeted each one politely and was especially respectful with an elderly lab.

Marlo is such a good boy and we’re rooting for him to find a home soon!”

Will you help us find the family Marlo has been waiting so patiently for? Our Adoption Center is open from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. every day except Wednesdays (closed) and we are located at 104 Portsmouth Avenue in Stratham, NH. We’d love for you to stop by and meet him soon!
