Hospice. We know that word can feel heavy. Not everyone is in a place to adopt a hospice dog, but everyone can help one by sharing this post. We would be so grateful if you would.

If you’ve ever been lucky enough to love and be loved by a German Shepherd, you know exactly the kind of girl eight-year-old Torah is: active, confident, and intelligent as all get-out.

More than anything, Torah is completely and utterly devoted to her people.

Like many senior dogs, Torah has arthritis, skin allergies, and needs a dental procedure that our veterinary team can provide at no cost post-adoption. What makes her a hospice dog is her recent diagnosis of low-grade mammary cancer. The good news is her tumor was discovered early, removed with clean margins, and her prognosis is considered favorable. She doesn’t need additional cancer treatment right now, but she will need routine monitoring as she enjoys her golden years.

Torah is a working dog with strong instincts to alert when she sees people and other dogs. As you can imagine, the constant activity in our Dog Pavilion really puts her instincts on full display. We are pleased to report that Torah has done great meeting new people and canine friends alike, and she seems especially comfortable with dogs that are smaller than she is. She appears to have a soft spot for puppies. Outside, where she’s truly in her element, the stress of the kennel melts away and she is able to show her sweet, loyal personality.

The truth is, Torah has no idea she’s a hospice dog and certainly does not take pity on herself. She doesn’t want her family to take pity on her, either. She just wants someone to throw her the ball, give her those real good scratches behind the ears, and simply be by her side through whatever adventure is around the corner.

Hospice isn’t a countdown. It’s a reminder not to waste the time we have. Torah is ready to make the most of every single day with someone who will love her as fiercely as she loves them.

If you’re a sucker for that unmistakable German Shepherd devotion and have the heart for hospice, we’d love for you to come by and meet Torah. Our Adoption Center is open from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. every day except Wednesday (closed) and until 7:00 p.m. on Thursdays. We’re located at 104 Portsmouth Avenue in Stratham, NH and hope to see you soon.
